Vedanta Lanjigarh Boosts Rail Infrastructure for 5 MTPA Refinery Expansion

Vedanta Lanjigarh Boosts Rail Infrastructure for 5 MTPA Refinery Expansion

Vedanta Aluminium, India's largest aluminium producer, has inaugurated a 13.4 km railway line to strengthen its supply chain and improve logistics efficiency. The new rail link is expected to cut carbon emissions by 262 tonnes of CO₂ annually, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals.

The expansion comes alongside the commissioning of Vedanta’s 5 MTPA alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha. "This will ensure seamless inbound and outbound movement (100% through rail) of raw materials and commodities," the company said in a statement, reaffirming its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier.

In addition to the new railway line, Vedanta has introduced six loop lines within the plant’s yard, supported by an upgraded electronic signalling system. These enhancements will boost the facility’s capacity to handle up to 25 million tonnes of raw materials annually, accommodating 20 rakes per day with improved efficiency.

Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, highlighted the benefits of the expansion, stating that it will reduce turnaround time and support the company's long-term production goals.
