Wabag Explores Collaborations for Pure-Water Supply in the Green Hydrogen Sector
Chennai-based water technology leader, Va Tech Wabag, is strategically venturing into partnerships within the green hydrogen domain. With an emphasis on becoming a water partner to enterprises focused on green hydrogen production, the global water technology player aims to leverage its in-house capabilities and extensive experience in the industry.
While green hydrogen, known for its potential in significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, is currently not economically feasible, numerous companies are investing in the sector with the anticipation of decreasing costs over time.
Rajiv Mittal, Chairman and Managing Director of Va Tech Wabag Ltd, expressed confidence in the future viability of green hydrogen. He stated, "In the next 5 years or so, green hydrogen will become economically viable and it will see the success the solar power segment witnessed. 20 years ago, everyone said solar wouldn’t work, but it is now successfully competing with thermal."
Highlighting the critical role of water in hydrogen production, Mittal emphasized the importance of clean water to maintain the efficiency of electrodes in the process. Va Tech Wabag positions itself as a provider of safe and clean water for hydrogen production, claiming the ability to produce cleaner water than other alternatives.
As a potential water partner, Va Tech Wabag envisions constructing, operating, and maintaining water treatment plants to offer reliable sources of clean water to green hydrogen companies. Mittal revealed, "There are a number of companies in touch with Wabag to rope us in as a water partner."
Simultaneously, the company is actively working on establishing a pilot green hydrogen unit. The plan involves sourcing electrodes from top manufacturers and collaborating with leading solar panel suppliers to create a green power supply for the project. Mittal anticipates demonstrating the pilot project of green hydrogen production by the following year.
Beyond the green hydrogen sector, Va Tech Wabag is exploring opportunities in the semiconductor and bio-CNG domains. Recognizing the increased investment in semiconductor facilities globally, the company aims to contribute by providing high-quality, extra-pure water crucial for semiconductor manufacturing. Additionally, in the bio-CNG space, Va Tech Wabag, with over two decades of experience, is transitioning to a higher value chain within the Bio-CNG sector.
