15 agro well to be developed in Anuradhapura

Colombo: The Japanese Government through its Grant Assistance for Grass roots Human Security Projects (GGP) has provided Rs. 5,166,384 to construct 15 agro wells in the Maddyama Nuwaragampalatha Divisional Secretariat division in Anuradhapura, which will be implemented by the Women’s Development Society.

Farmers in Maddyama Nuwaragampalatha depend on rain water and can only cultivate for three months a year due to the scarcity of water.

These agro wells will enable farmers to cultivate throughout the year and will improve their livelihood. Seventy five families will directly benefit from this and 200 families indirectly.

The GGP is a scheme that funds NGO’s and local authorities to implement projects which directly benefit grass roots communities. During the current year, the GGP has funded projects for the livelihood development of the East, infrastructure development in Badulla and de-mining projects in the North and East.

The signing of the grant contract took place yesterday between Kaoru Shimazaki, Charge de Affaires of the Embassy of Japan and Wijitha Basnayake, Chairperson of the Women’s Development Society.
