About 60% of the construction work for Micron Technology’s first semiconductor plant at Sanand, Gujarat has been completed, with the facility expected to be handed over between September and December 2025, according to Tata Projects Ltd.
Amit Agarwal, Project Director of Micron’s semiconductor project at Tata Projects, confirmed during a site interaction that work on Phase 1 began in July 2024 and is on track to finish by the end of this year. "Currently, 60% of the work has been completed, including civil works. We will verify and test the entire facility before the handover," Agarwal stated.
The Phase 1 of the facility will include 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space and is designed for the Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) of DRAM and NAND products, addressing both domestic and international demand. These semiconductors are key components for smartphones, servers, and personal computers.
While cleanroom construction has not yet started, the materials have begun arriving at the warehouse, with construction of prototypes and verification currently underway. Full-scale cleanroom construction is expected to begin by July 2025.
The facility will feature multiple structures, including a central utility building, fabrication building, and administration building. The main fabrication building is being constructed using a modularisation strategy—a first for Micron projects. Modules weighing up to 710 tonnes are being assembled on the ground and lifted into place using strand jacks, a technique that eliminates the need for cranes.
Over 100,000 cubic meters of concrete have already been used, with 10,000 metric tonnes of structural steel installed so far. Additionally, HVAC pipelines nearly 20 kilometers long will be laid. Tata Projects is receiving technological support from Micron for constructing specialized facilities such as the cleanrooms and cryogenic gas storage, including facilities for storing Liquid Nitrogen and Helium, as well as 20 million liters of water per day.
The project site spans 93 acres, with 50% of the area dedicated to Phase 1. Tata Projects has also achieved a significant safety milestone with 1 crore LTI-free (Loss Time Injury) safe man-hours recorded on the site, a record across all Micron project sites globally. Currently, an average of 3,500 workers are on-site, with the workforce expected to rise to 5,000 as work intensifies.
Micron plans to invest $825 million across two project phases, which will create up to 5,000 direct jobs. As part of the Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme, the Indian government will provide 50% fiscal support for the project cost, while the State of Gujarat will offer incentives amounting to 20% of the total project cost. The combined investment from Micron and both government entities will total up to $2.75 billion over both phases.
