Adani Ports Eyes ₹13,000 Crore Phase 2 Expansion at Vizhinjam.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has announced ambitious plans for the second phase expansion of its recently inaugurated Vizhinjam International Deepwater Seaport, with a proposed investment of ₹13,000 crore. This expansion aims to increase the port's capacity to 5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) by the year 2028.

The Vizhinjam port, located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, currently boasts a capacity of one million tonnes. Since commencing trial operations in June of last year, it has handled an impressive 280 ships and managed 6 lakh TEUs of transshipment containers, demonstrating its growing significance as a key maritime hub.

According to Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ, the Vizhinjam port is already operating at a remarkable 90 percent utilization level. Buoyed by this strong performance, the company is poised to undertake the second phase of expansion in the near future. Mr. Adani confirmed that this substantial ₹13,000 crore investment will be entirely funded by Adani Ports and SEZ, underscoring their long-term commitment to the project and its potential.

This significant expansion will dramatically increase the handling capacity of the Vizhinjam port, further solidifying its position as a major transshipment hub on the Indian coastline and boosting trade and economic activity in the region. The planned increase to 5 million TEUs by 2028 signifies Adani Ports' confidence in the port's strategic location and its ability to attract significant maritime traffic.
