Alstom Delivers First Driverless Train for Chennai Metro Phase II.
French multinational Alstom, a leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has delivered the first driverless trainset for the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project, as announced by a top official on Thursday. In February, Alstom secured orders to manufacture 36 trains, each consisting of three cars, designed to operate on a 26 km corridor linking Poonamallee Bypass to Light House, which features 28 stations—18 elevated and 10 underground.
The trainsets were produced at Alstom's facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, and are part of the Indian government's 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives. Valued at €124 million, the project also includes training for Chennai Metro personnel in operation and maintenance. Alstom stated that these trains will provide an efficient, environmentally friendly, and comfortable travel solution for Chennai's commuters.
"Chennai Metro has become a beacon of efficient and reliable transportation, transforming daily commutes for its residents," said Alstom India Managing Director Olivier Loison. "We are proud to support this vision by delivering world-class Made-in-India driverless metro trains that enhance the commuter experience and contribute to sustainable mobility by reducing emissions and alleviating road congestion."
The trains were designed in Bengaluru and manufactured at the Sri City facility in Tada, Andhra Pradesh. Loison emphasized Alstom's commitment to reshaping Chennai's mass transit landscape for a greener future, stating, "As India's trusted partner in advancing sustainable transportation, Alstom is dedicated to strengthening this partnership."
In 2010, Alstom delivered 208 metro cars for Phase I of the Chennai Metro Rail project. With the delivery of the first trainset for Phase II, Alstom continues to demonstrate its commitment to transforming Chennai's mobility landscape, paving the way for a more connected and sustainable future.
