Amara Raja Infra, a division of the $2 billion Amara Raja Group, has completed India’s first green hydrogen fuelling station in Leh, Ladakh, for NTPC Ltd. The project marks a significant milestone in India’s green mobility initiatives, enabling emission-free transport in and around Leh.
The fuelling station was inaugurated by Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power, Housing, and Urban Affairs. As part of the project, NTPC will deploy five hydrogen fuel cell buses in the region, promoting sustainable transport in the challenging Himalayan terrain.
The project involved the design, engineering, supply, construction, erection, testing, and commissioning of the hydrogen station, alongside a three-year operation and maintenance contract. The station, with a capacity to produce 80 kg of green hydrogen daily, was completed in two years under extreme conditions, at an altitude of 3,400 meters above sea level and temperatures ranging from -25°C to 30°C.
“This challenging project reaffirms our EPC expertise and marks our entry into the green hydrogen infrastructure space,” said Dwarakanadha Reddy, Business Head (Power EPC) at Amara Raja Infra, in a statement.
The initiative serves as a precursor to large-scale green hydrogen mobility and storage projects under India’s National Hydrogen Energy Mission. The project will also provide insights for deploying hydrogen fuelling stations across the country, laying the groundwork for a robust green hydrogen ecosystem, according to the company.
