Amrut Distilleries to Boost Production Capacity by December 2024.
Bengaluru-based Amrut Distilleries plans to increase its production capacity by 30% by December 2024, expanding its distillation capacity from 1.3-1.5 million litres per annum. This follows a tripling of capacity to 1 million litres in 2018.
The whisky giant primarily serves mass-market brands in Kerala and Karnataka but is expanding its premium segment across India. “About eight years ago, we entered the rest of the country with our premium alcohol offerings. Today, we are available in 22 states, and that footprint is slowly growing,” said Rakshit Jagdale, Managing Director of Amrut Distilleries.
Jagdale highlighted the growing trend of premiumisation in the alcohol industry, noting that Indian consumers are increasingly recognizing the value of high-quality products. “Single malt whisky, especially in the UK, was once seen as an elderly gentleman’s drink. That changed when we launched our single malt in Europe 20 years ago, attracting younger consumers. Now, we see the same trend in the US and India. The younger generation aspires to drink better quality in smaller quantities, shifting the demographics and concept of premiumisation.”
Amrut Distilleries has a global presence in 57 countries, offering nearly 50 variants of its single malt whisky. Despite this international reach, India remains its largest market, followed by the United States, the European Union, and the UK. “The market for Indian single malts in Japan is growing, and global acceptance of Indian single malts has significantly evolved. There is ample opportunity for growth in this category worldwide,” added Jagdale.
The company operates a distillery in Bengaluru and a bottling unit in Davangere, Karnataka, with another bottling unit in Palakkad, Kerala. Amrut also has contract bottling facilities in Punjab, Kerala, and Bengaluru. Its single malt whiskies are exclusively produced at its Bengaluru distillery.
Amrut Distilleries recently won five gold medals at the London-based International Spirits Challenge (ISC) 2024 in the “World Whisky Category,” competing against brands from Scotland, Ireland, and Japan. Amrut Fusion, one of the most awarded single malts, has garnered over 40 accolades at global forums, contributing to a total of 350 international accolades for the House of Amrut. The company’s portfolio includes about 80 brand variants, including single malts.
