ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Opens First Scrap Processing Facility in Maharashtra.

Akshaya Gujral, Executive Director of Downstream Operations at AM/NS India, highlighted the steel sector's role in developing the necessary infrastructure to increase the share of scrap metal in steel production to 50% by 2047. He emphasized that AM/NS India's new scrap processing units will formalise the domestic scrap market, meet rising customer demand for recycled steel, and support India's sustainability goals.

Currently, AM/NS India’s steel production incorporates 3-5% scrap, but the company aims to raise this to over 10% by 2030. With 65% of its steelmaking capacity already utilizing the gas-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) – Electric Arc Furnace route, AM/NS India is strategically positioned to integrate more processed scrap into its production, reinforcing its commitment to greener, more efficient steel manufacturing.
