"Authorities in Odisha have been directed to fast-track the implementation of the Mahanadi riverfront initiative to ensure its timely completion."

Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister Krishna Chandra Mahapatra on Wednesday directed officials to accelerate work on the Mahanadi riverfront development project in Cuttack, aiming for its early implementation.

The flagship urban rejuvenation initiative, estimated at ₹150 crore, will be developed across 426 acres along the Mahanadi riverfront. Officials said the project seeks to transform the riverfront into a vibrant public, cultural, and recreational space, while boosting tourism and enhancing the urban environment.

Chairing a progress review meeting, Mahapatra emphasized the need for time-bound execution and instructed concerned agencies to fast-track statutory approvals, tendering processes, and all preparatory works to ensure early commencement. The project will be implemented by the Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) through an open tender process.

According to the approved master plan, the project will be executed in three phases:

  Phase I: Development of a 3.2 km-long riverfront promenade from Baliyatra Ground to the Maritime Museum, including pathways and essential utilities in the Balijatra zone.

  Phase II: Expansion of pathways, underground utility infrastructure, and extensive tree plantations across the remaining areas, with a focus on environmental sustainability.

  Phase III: Creation of recreational, cultural, and tourism-oriented facilities, including Cuttack Haat, a heritage village, food truck and entrance zones, playgrounds, sensory and fitness parks, a nature interpretation centre, entrance plaza, thematic gardens, an open-air maritime museum, and an adventure zone, among other public amenities.

  
  

The project is expected to significantly enhance Cuttack’s urban landscape while providing residents and tourists with a modern, sustainable riverfront experience.
