BEML Secures ₹867 Crore Contract from ICF Chennai for Manufacturing Two High-Speed Trains.
BEML Ltd., a public-sector undertaking specializing in heavy equipment manufacturing, has been awarded a contract worth ₹866.87 crore by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai to design, manufacture, and commission two high-speed trains, each comprising eight cars. These trains are intended for use on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, a project being developed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).
The cost per train car is set at ₹27.86 crore, encompassing design costs, one-time development expenses, non-recurring charges, and one-time costs for jigs, fixtures, tooling, and testing facilities. These resources will be utilized for all future high-speed rail projects in India, according to the company.
The trainsets will be constructed at BEML's Bengaluru rail coach complex, with a scheduled delivery date by the end of 2026. This project represents a significant milestone in India's high-speed rail initiative, marking the production of the first indigenously designed and manufactured trainsets capable of reaching test speeds of 280 km/h. The trains will feature fully air-conditioned chair car configurations and offer modern passenger amenities, including reclining and rotatable seats, special provisions for passengers with restricted mobility, and onboard infotainment systems.
BEML operates across three main verticals: Defence and Aerospace, Mining and Construction, and Rail and Metro. The company has manufacturing facilities in Bengaluru, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Mysuru, and Palakkad.
As of the latest trading session, BEML's shares closed at ₹3,719.60, down 0.29% on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The company reported a topline of ₹634.08 crore and a consolidated net loss of ₹70.03 crore for the quarter ending June 30, 2024.
