Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced recently that Bengaluru will have 175 km of new metro lines operational by 2026, marking a significant expansion in the city's public transit network.
After inspecting the newly extended metro line from Nagasandra to Madavara on Tumkur Road, Shivakumar shared plans for further developments, stating, “Thirty kilometers of new metro lines will be added by 2025, with the total reaching 175 km by 2026.” He conducted a test run along the new stretch, accompanied by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya and other MLAs.
Shivakumar outlined several infrastructural improvements underway to enhance commuter access and convenience. “We have completed the first and second metro phases, with the third phase approved by the Centre. We’ve already allocated ₹1,130 crore for new trains,” he said. Discussions with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are ongoing for an underpass at Madavara metro station and an underpass development project at Chikkabidarakallu. Additionally, plans include a pedestrian skywalk at Manjunathanagar metro station and a joint pedestrian passage project with Indian Railways at Yeshwanthpur railway station.
The newly extended 3.14-km segment of the Namma Metro Green Line, connecting Nagasandra to Madavara, will open for commercial operations on November 7. Initially, the segment will be available to the public on an experimental basis, with an official inauguration to follow.
With the current Green Line spanning 33.46 km and the Purple Line 40.5 km, Shivakumar expressed gratitude for the Centre’s support and highlighted Bengaluru’s high metro ridership as proof of the service’s value to city residents.
