Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) and the Mumbai Port Sustainability Foundation (MPSF) to establish a cutting-edge green fuel ecosystem at Mumbai Port. This initiative marks a significant step in India's transition towards cleaner energy alternatives and aims to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, supporting the nation’s climate goals.
The MoU was signed in the presence of G Krishnakumar, chairman and managing director of BPCL; Rahul Tandon, business head (I&C) of BPCL; and Rajiv Jalota, chairperson of the Mumbai Port Authority. The signing took place during the inauguration of the Cruise Bharat Mission, led by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.
Krishnakumar highlighted that the agreement aligns with BPCL’s commitment to sustainability, including its objective of achieving net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2040. “By enabling sustainable energy solutions like LNG and electric vehicles for the maritime sector, we are demonstrating our social responsibility and partnering for sustainable growth with the communities we serve,” he stated.
Tandon added that the collaboration aims to leverage LNG and green energy infrastructure to revolutionize maritime operations. “This partnership reflects our commitment to driving innovation in fuel solutions that not only cut carbon emissions but also create long-term value for the environment and industry,” he noted.
As part of the green fuel initiative, BPCL and MbPA plan to establish electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Mumbai Port. Additionally, the agreement includes exploring the conversion of diesel-powered vessels to cleaner fuel alternatives, further enhancing the port’s green infrastructure and reducing its carbon footprint.
The MoU also addresses waste management, with BPCL and MPSF collaborating to implement systems for the segregation, storage, and handling of recyclable and non-recyclable solid waste at the port. This initiative aims to promote socially responsible practices, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable operational environment.
“This collaboration exemplifies the use of innovative technologies and solutions to drive research and development in the energy sector,” BPCL stated. The company’s leadership reinforces its role in shaping India’s sustainable future, positioning Mumbai Port as a model of environmental responsibility for ports across the nation.
