Bridge work on Nanjundapuram Road likely to be completed soon.

The State Highways Department is hopeful of completing the road over bridge project across the railway level-crossing on Nanjundapuram Road in a couple of months.

An official told The Hindu that efforts are on to complete the works by the end of next month or maximum by June. Only a small portion of concrete and road works is pending. The contractor has paid a penalty of Rs. 14 lakh for the delay. The Rs.12.6 crore project involves construction of 693 metre, two-lane bridge. It includes 337.75 metre road on the Ramanathapuram side and 317.26 metre road on the Podanur side.

Works started more than two years ago. Land acquisition was completed in August last year and the works were expected to be completed by December, 2013.

K. Karuppusamy of the Kovai Nanjundapuram Railway Bridge Protest Committee says that some of the officials had met the residents of the area and said that the works will be completed by March. However, the works have slowed down now. Though only a small portion of the works is pending, it has to be expedited. The works might have slowed down because of the elections. Efforts should be taken to complete the project in a month or two.
