Cement Factory in Sohra to be Transformed into Tourist Hub, Says Meghalaya CM.

The Meghalaya government plans to transform the now-closed Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL) factory in Sohra into a tourism facility, such as a resort or hotel. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the initiative in the assembly, emphasizing that the project would be a collaborative effort with local authorities and the community.

"Realizing the employment opportunities, we are actively pursuing it," the CM said in response to a query from Mawkyrwat legislator Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar.

The Chief Minister confirmed that he met with the Hima Sohra (local village authorities) on August 12, who expressed strong interest in a partnership with the government to advance the project. Sangma expressed confidence that a "positive decision" would be reached soon, noting that profits from the venture would be shared with the Dorbar/Hima authorities to benefit the local population.

Factory's Closure and Employee Compensation

In a separate session, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who oversees commerce and industries, stated that a previous proposal to revive MCCL through a joint venture failed to find a suitable partner. He explained that after multiple discussions with stakeholders and the board of directors, the decision was made to permanently close the plant due to a series of persistent challenges.

Dhar also assured the assembly that all 201 MCCL employees are being fully compensated. A total settlement package of ₹98.25 crore is being disbursed in three installments, with the final payment slated for the next financial year. This decision was made in response to a query from Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem.
