Centre Approves 5G Connectivity for Airports.

India is set to introduce 5G mobile connectivity at its airports, marking a significant step in enhancing passenger services and improving operational efficiency. The decision, confirmed by sources, follows rigorous safety assessments and consultations with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Telecommunications, and Ministry of Defence.

Previously, the rollout of 5G near airports had been hindered by concerns over potential interference with aircraft altimeter readings and communication systems. Altimeters are essential for navigation, as they measure an aircraft’s altitude above the earth’s surface. However, following the installation of new-generation altimeters and successful controlled trials, an inter-ministerial panel has approved the plan to deploy 5G services at airports.

The move will enable telecom service providers to install the necessary infrastructure to offer high-speed mobile data, marking a major step towards integrating next-generation networks into key public spaces, starting with India’s major airports. The services are expected to roll out in phases, beginning with international airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

In addition to improving connectivity, the introduction of 5G at airports will enhance services such as real-time luggage tracking, seamless check-ins, and better passenger information systems. Telecom companies and airport operators are now tasked with setting up the infrastructure needed for the rollout.

Industry experts have welcomed the decision, highlighting that it will not only improve the travel experience but also strengthen India's position as a hub for technological innovation. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of creating a robust nationwide 5G ecosystem.
