Centre Plans Pilot Project to Revive Kuttanad Fish Farming.

The central government has announced a new pilot project to boost the livelihoods of the fishing community in the Kuttanad region. The initiative was declared by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, George Kurian, during a meeting at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute.

Under the new plan, the Fisheries Department will implement both modern and traditional aquaculture methods to revitalize the local economy. These practices include:

  • Integrated fish farming

  • Cage fish farming

  • The sustainable “one fish, one paddy” initiative

  • Biofloc fish farming

As part of the project, Fish Farmers Producers Organizations (FFPOs) will be created to empower local communities and streamline their operations, aiming to provide better opportunities for fish farmers in the region.
