The Union government has sanctioned a significant ₹720 crore project for Tamil Nadu, aimed at facilitating the evacuation of approximately 4,000 MW of renewable energy capacity. This initiative falls under Phase-II of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) and is set to bolster the state's green energy infrastructure.
The project includes the construction of 624 circuit kilometers (ckm) of new transmission lines and the addition of 2200 MVA in substation capacity. The Centre will provide a Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of 33 percent of the total estimated project cost, underscoring its commitment to boosting renewable energy integration.
Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited (TANTRANSCO) will serve as the implementing agency for this crucial project, which has been divided into nine distinct packages for efficient execution. This information was shared by Shripad Yess Naik, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, in response to a question from Tamil Nadu Member of Parliament S. Jagathratchakan.
Minister Naik also highlighted Tamil Nadu's robust existing grid infrastructure, noting that the state is "well connected with the National Grid through high capacity transmission corridors comprising 765 kV & 400 kV lines as well as an +800kV HVDC System." This extensive network already enables the smooth transfer of power via the Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) between Tamil Nadu and other states and regions. The minister affirmed that power transfer capacities are continually being strengthened to adapt to evolving power transfer scenarios while maintaining reliability and security.
