Chennai Airport to Remain Under Government Control, Confirms Civil Aviation Minister.

Chennai Airport will remain under government control and is not on the privatisation list, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed recently, dismissing speculation that the airport could be privatised after ongoing construction is completed.

"Chennai is not in the privatisation list. Don't worry," Naidu said while speaking to the media at the Chennai airport, where he launched the Udan Yatri Café at the international terminal.

Addressing the broader issue of airport privatisation, Naidu clarified that a proposal to privatise 11 airports was submitted before the general elections and is currently pending with the Union Cabinet. "The decision is yet to be made at that stage," he said.

While acknowledging that privatisation has led to improved services at some airports, Naidu emphasized that the government is working on a balanced approach. He explained that leasing operations to private entities for a certain period helps bring in investment and better services while the land remains under government ownership.

However, when asked if Chennai Airport would be considered under such a model once construction is completed, Naidu categorically denied it. "No, no. Chennai is very close to our heart. We want to improve services ourselves and are committed to doing our best for Chennai Airport," he said.

Expansion Plans for Chennai Airport

Calling Chennai Airport the fourth largest airport in India and the gateway to the East, Naidu said the government is prioritizing its development. The airport’s annual passenger capacity, currently at 22 million, is expected to increase to 35 million through terminal expansions and operational improvements.

The construction of Terminal 3 is expected to be completed by March 2026, he added.

Focus on Passenger Experience and Cargo Growth

Naidu also addressed concerns about parking access and passenger convenience, emphasizing that even minor issues would be addressed on a real-time basis. "For passengers, these are priority issues. We want a smooth and comfortable experience from parking to boarding," he said, adding that the state government’s support would be sought where necessary.

On cargo operations, the minister highlighted Chennai’s strategic role as an industrial hub and assured that efforts are underway to seamlessly enhance cargo handling at the airport.
