Chennai Metro Rail to extend MRTS from Tambaram to Velachery with reassessed demand forecast

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) has initiated a significant move towards expanding its Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) by signing a Contract Agreement with SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) Pvt. Ltd. This agreement aims to provide consultancy services for reassessing the Travel Demand Forecasting Study to implement an MRTS extension from Tambaram to Velachery, with possible further extension to either Guindy or Little Mount, covering a stretch of 26 km.

The agreement, formalized between T Archunan, Director (Projects) of CMRL, and Sandeep Fuller, Senior Vice President of SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) Pvt. Ltd., took place in New Delhi, as announced by a press release from CMRL.

The decision to reassess the Travel Demand Forecasting Study stems from the previous Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR), which originally considered the corridor only up to Velachery MRTS station. However, this earlier report did not account for potential connections to existing Metro stations through Velachery's bustling commercial and residential areas. As a result, the reassessment aims to incorporate these crucial factors into the updated DFR, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the project's feasibility and potential impact.
