Construction Begins on Lucknow Bio-CNG Plant to Convert Waste into Clean Energy.

Construction has started on Lucknow’s first large-scale bio-CNG and fertiliser plant near Amausi, marking a major step in the city’s waste-to-energy and clean fuel initiatives. The ₹80-crore project is being developed by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The facility, spread over 7.5 acres near the Nadarganj shooting range, will process up to 300 tonnes of organic waste daily, including cow dung from Kanha Gaushala, kitchen waste, vegetable market refuse, and agricultural residue. Officials say the project will help reduce pressure on landfills and improve city cleanliness, while boosting Lucknow’s performance in Swachh Survekshan rankings.

Once operational, the plant is expected to generate nearly ₹1.5 crore annually through royalty and cow dung supply charges. Additionally, a fixed monthly payment of ₹11 lakh from the private operator and fuel savings of around ₹10 lakh per month—by supplying bio-CNG to municipal vehicles at roughly 5% below market rates—will ensure steady revenue for the LMC.

Mayor Sushma Kharkwal said the plant is likely to create about 500 jobs, support cleaner public transport, and provide farmers with affordable organic fertiliser. Although the project was initially set for inauguration in November 2025, commissioning is now targeted for March 2026 following earlier delays.
