The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved five capital acquisition proposals valued at over ₹21,772 crore, including the procurement of advanced water jet fast attack crafts, electronic warfare systems, and upgrades for the SU-30MKI fighter jets.
Among the key proposals, the DAC granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of 31 New Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts (NWJFACs) for the Indian Navy. These vessels will play a crucial role in low-intensity maritime operations, including surveillance, patrol, and search-and-rescue operations near the coast. Additionally, they will be instrumental in anti-piracy missions, particularly around India's island territories.
The council also approved the procurement of 120 Fast Interceptor Crafts (FIC-1), designed to escort high-value naval assets such as aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines for coastal defence.
Another significant decision was the approval for the acquisition of an Electronic Warfare Suite (EWS) for the SU-30MKI fighter jets, including External Airborne Self-Protection Jammer pods and the Next Generation Radar Warning Receiver. This system will enhance the jets' operational capabilities, enabling them to evade enemy radar and air defence systems during missions.
Additionally, the DAC greenlit the overhaul of engines for Sukhoi fighter aircraft, a move aimed at extending the service life of these critical assets. This follows a recent deal signed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for the license manufacturing of 240 AL-31FP Aero Engines for the SU-30MKI fleet.
The council also approved the procurement of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) M (MR) for the Indian Coast Guard to bolster coastal security and surveillance.
In a move to modernise the Indian Army, the DAC approved the overhaul of T-72 and T-90 tanks and the BMP infantry combat vehicles, including an upgrade to the T-72 tanks with an indigenously developed 1000-hp engine, replacing the existing 780-hp model.
These approvals mark a significant step in enhancing the operational capabilities of India's armed forces, ensuring they remain well-equipped to address emerging security challenges.
