Deendayal Port Commissions India's First 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant.

Deendayal Port Commissions India's First 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant.

In a major step toward India’s clean energy transition, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla has commissioned the country’s first megawatt-scale green hydrogen plant. Developed under the Make-in-India initiative, the 1 MW facility is the initial phase of a larger 10 MW project, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in May.

Implemented by engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the plant is expected to produce approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The inauguration ceremony was led by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, who praised the DPA for its swift execution. "DPA has turned that vision into reality, a shining example of speed, scale, and skill under Maritime India Vision 2030," Sonowal said.

The project is a key part of India's push for maritime decarbonization. Sonowal also highlighted that the DPA had previously deployed India’s first all-electric green tug and urged other ports to adopt similar sustainable technologies.

Minister of State Shantanu Thakur echoed this sentiment, calling the commissioning a "proud moment" that signifies India's growing leadership in clean energy and self-reliance. This new facility at Deendayal Port is a significant milestone following a series of pilot projects and policy initiatives across the country aimed at integrating green hydrogen into industrial clusters, transport, and refueling networks.
