In a major move to strengthen coastal security, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently signed a ₹1,220.12 crore contract with state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of 149 Software Defined Radios (SDRs) for the Indian Coast Guard.
The order falls under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP), ensuring that the equipment is designed, developed, and manufactured within India.
These advanced SDRs will enhance secure and high-speed data transmission, voice communication, and situational awareness, boosting operational efficiency. The MoD emphasized that the procurement will significantly strengthen the Indian Coast Guard’s capabilities in maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, fisheries protection, and environmental safeguarding.
The new communication systems will also improve interoperability with the Indian Navy, facilitating seamless joint operations.
“This project is a strategic step toward enhancing the Coast Guard’s operational readiness and supporting the Government of India’s Blue Economy objectives by reinforcing maritime security,” the ministry stated.
The contract aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, contributing to India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing while generating employment and fostering expertise in advanced communication systems.
This follows a previous order placed by the Indian Air Force in February for software-based lightweight man-portable radio communication sets from BEL, further cementing the company’s role in India’s defense modernization efforts.
