Dharavi Redevelopment Project and SRA Designated Special Planning Authorities for Salt Pan Land.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) have been appointed as the special planning authority for the 42.51-acre Jamasp Salt Pan land in Mulund East, according to a notification issued by the Maharashtra Urban Development Department on October 27.

The notification also confirmed SRA’s designation as the special planning authority for the Dharavi area, including the railway land adjacent to it, as well as the 8.5-hectare Kurla Dairy land. These lands are part of the broader rehabilitation initiative under the DRP, aimed at providing rental housing for Dharavi residents who do not qualify for free housing within Dharavi.

The Mulund salt pan forms a segment of the 256 acres approved by the Centre for the Dharavi redevelopment project. Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL), the special purpose vehicle established to implement the project, paid ₹320 crore to the Salt Commissioner for the Jamasp salt pan land. The DRP and SRA took physical possession of the land in April this year.

An official noted that since DRP and SRA are overseeing the entire rehabilitation project, it was logical for them to serve as the planning authority for all associated lands.

However, the project faces opposition from local residents. Mulund residents have voiced strong objections to the relocation of Dharavi residents to the area, while Kurla residents have opposed rehabilitation activities on the Kurla Dairy land.
