Dockyard PLC to construct passenger ship
Sri Lanka: Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) having secured an order for the construction of two numbers 250 passenger cum 100 ton cargo carrying capacity vessels for the Government of India, will commence block assembly work of the first vessel on March 5.
This is a significant project as this is the first time in the history of local shipbuilding industry, that a Sri Lankan organisation has been awarded a shipbuilding project by India.
Incidentally, this is the first Ocean going passenger vessel construction to be undertaken by CDPLC. In monitory terms, this order for the two passenger vessels has brought in a revenue of US$ 36.6 million for CDPLC.
This project signifies CDPLC’s entry into the Iucrative passenger vessel market, which was paved by the successful performance of the company in the local and international shipbuilding arena.
In addition, this award also marks a significant strength to CDPLC’s future Shipbuilding business strategy, as a potential Passenger Vessel builder.
With the Union Territories of Lakshadweep, Nicobar and Andaman Islands in India and all other SAARC countries requiring vessels for passenger transportation, CDPLC would definitely be in a position to acquire more orders in the future, CDL sources said.
The design of this passenger vessel is developed by a world renowned ship design firm Larsen and Toubro Limited, e-Engineering Solutions - Marine & Ship which is a Strategic Business Unit of Larsen & Toubro Limited of India.
These vessels would be built and classed by Lloyds Register of Shipping and Indian Register of Shipping and statutory rules applicable.
