EIL Completes Construction of India's Largest Underground Rock Cavern for LPG Storage.

In a significant boost to India’s energy infrastructure, state-run Engineers India Limited (EIL) has successfully completed the development of the country's largest underground rock cavern for LPG storage. The project, executed for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), is located within the premises of an existing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant in Mangalore.

The cavern, a landmark engineering achievement, boasts a massive storage capacity of 80,000 tonnes, making it the single largest facility of its kind in India.

According to EIL, the project is particularly noteworthy for its innovative design. The cavern was excavated directly beneath pre-existing surface facilities, an approach described as a "first-of-its-kind." This method allows for the dual use of land, which EIL says will optimize space utilization and serve as a model for future infrastructure developments.
