Engie Secures India’s First Battery Storage Project.
French utility Engie SA has secured its first standalone battery-storage project in India, marking a significant step in its strategy to tap the country’s fast-growing renewables sector and triple its clean-power capacity there by 2030.
The 280-megawatt energy-storage system was awarded through a tender run by state-owned Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd., Engie said in a statement on Monday. Once completed in 2027, it will be the company’s second-largest battery project globally, trailing only a larger installation in the United States, according to a company spokesperson.
Engie has been shifting part of its investment focus toward markets such as India amid a slowdown in U.S. green-energy development following President Donald Trump’s reelection. India, meanwhile, is accelerating efforts to expand battery-storage capacity as it works toward doubling its clean-power fleet to 500 gigawatts by 2030, a move seen as essential to stabilizing the grid as more solar and wind generation comes online.
