Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently virtually inaugurated the Tardeo-Nagpada-Mumbai Central flyover, a crucial east-west corridor in South Mumbai designed to provide commuters with a smoother and safer alternative route. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was present alongside Fadnavis during the virtual launch.
The new 333-metre flyover replaces a 130-year-old British-era bridge at Mumbai Central, which had been declared dangerous and subsequently dismantled. The project restores connectivity that had been disrupted for the past two years, easing congestion on major arteries including Jehangir Boman Behram Road (formerly Bellasis Road), Dr Dadasaheb Bhadkamkar Marg (Grant Road), Pathe Bapurao Marg, and the Mahalaxmi station bridge.
The flyover features a 7-metre-wide carriageway with adequately wide footpaths on both sides. Its span includes 138.39 metres on the eastern side, 157.39 metres on the western side, and 36.90 metres within railway limits, linking Tardeo, Nagpada, and the Mumbai Central railway station.
Completed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a record 15 months and six days—well ahead of the scheduled deadline—the project involved complex coordination with railway authorities, local wards, traffic police, and other agencies. Railway-related work included construction over tracks, while the BMC handled girder bracing, deck installation, slab casting, and approach roads.
The project faced multiple challenges, including relocating Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) utility lines, demolishing obstructing structures with provision for alternative accommodations, removing a housing society boundary wall, and addressing a high court case.
Authorities have completed load tests and obtained structural stability and safety certifications, along with a no-objection certificate from the railway department. The flyover is now ready for public use, officials confirmed, offering a safer, faster, and more reliable route for commuters across South Mumbai.
