Feat: Karachi Port handle 0.1-mn containers during Dec

Karachi: Karachi Port handled a record volume of 101,099 TEUs (Twenty Feet Equivalent Units) container cargo at the Karachi Port during December 2005. A statement issued here on Wednesday said that this was the first time in the history of Pakistan that the 100,000 mark was crossed in container handling by the Karachi Port.

The import and export containers handled at the port were 51,486 and 49,613 TEUs, respectively.

The average international container growth rate handling is 6-8 percent, whereas the port achieved a staggering 26 percent growth rate in just six months.

This is almost 20 percent higher than the world average and also 19 percent higher than the Pakistan's GDP. Modernisation and computerisation of the activities has played a major role in improving the overall efficiency of the port.
