Foundation stone laid for Uppur thermal plant.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa laid the foundation stone for the 2x800 MW supercritical thermal power plant at Uppur in Ramanathapuram district recently.
At a function at the Secretariat, she also gave a Rs. 5,580-crore contract order for a boiler, turbine and generator to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) chairman and managing director Atul Sobti. According to an official release, the government was keen on making Tamil Nadu a power-surplus State and the Uppur plant that will become operational in September 2019 will generate 38.4 million units a day with the State getting about 12,000 million units a year.
This is the second supercritical plant that BHEL has bagged an order for. In February, it was awarded the State’s first 1x800 MW North Chennai Supercritical TPS Stage III plant valued at Rs 2,759 crore.
The Chief Minister also inaugurated 13 sub-stations that have come up in 12 districts at a cost of Rs. 424 crore. Electricity Minister Natham R. Viswanathan and Tangedco CMD M. Saikumar were present.
