Govt. to acquire land for Wayanad Medical College.
The government has decided to acquire 50 acres of land at Chelod estate in Wayanad district, subject to conditions, for setting up a Government Medical College in the district.
It has been the long-standing demand of the people of Wayanad to establish a Government Medical College so that tertiary care facilities are affordable to people.
The government thus intended to acquire land and go head with the construction work for the hospital as soon as possible, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja said in a statement here on Wednesday. Earlier, the government had acquired land at Kottathara village for setting up the medical college. However, there was much devastation in this land during the recent floods and the land had been found unsuitable for erecting multi-storeyed buildings.
The government had, through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, sanctioned ₹625 crore for setting up the medical college. The plan envisaged a modern medical college hospital in 40,000 sq m academic block and accommodation block. INKEL has been engaged as the special purpose vehicle for executing the project.
The academic block, in the first phase would have 25 departments, including anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, community medicine, general medicine, paediatrics, general surgery, orthopaedics and gynaecology. It will also house a central library, lecture theatre, auditorium and laboratory.
The hospital block will have 470 beds. The block will have three divisions, medicine and allied specialities, surgery and allied specialities, and obstetrics and gynaecology.
The plan also proposed 10 operation theatres, labour room, radio-diagnosis, anaesthesiology, central laboratory, emergency wing, pharmacy and stores.
