Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha recently announced that a ring road is being constructed around Agartala to address growing traffic congestion in the city. The initiative is part of a broader plan to ensure the state’s holistic development, including the creation of satellite townships in Agartala, Udaipur, and Dharmanagar.
The Chief Minister made the announcement while inaugurating the renovation and beautification of MBB College Lake in Agartala, a project implemented under the Agartala Smart City Scheme with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Speaking at the event, CM Saha highlighted the emotional and historical significance of MBB College, sharing his personal connection as a former student. “Today, a beautiful environment has been created through the lake’s renovation. It’s now a matter of pride for the people of Tripura. Our government wants to provide the state with modern, smart infrastructure,” he said.
The revamped lake area now includes a walking track of around 2.5 km, water sports facilities, yoga zones, children’s play areas, and more. The entry fee has been kept at Rs 10, with public access from 8 AM to 8 PM. The Chief Minister said the initiative would also help deter anti-social activities and promote community engagement.
Dr. Saha also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision behind the Smart City Mission, noting that Agartala’s inclusion in the scheme has significantly accelerated development.
He further informed that the Howrah River Bank Development Project, slated for 2025–26, is nearing completion and will be inaugurated soon. Additionally, the Tripura Urban and Tourism Development Project — also funded by ADB — is underway with a ₹230 crore allocation. This project covers 12 municipal areas and includes work on sewage systems, water supply, road infrastructure, and urban facilities, expected to be completed within two years.
The Chief Minister confirmed budget allocations for developing satellite townships in Agartala, Udaipur, and Dharmanagar, aimed at decentralizing urban population and reducing pressure on existing infrastructure.
He also provided updates on other key initiatives, including the construction of the Unity Mall in Badharghat under the 'One District, One Product' scheme, and the development of a five-star hotel with around 100 rooms at Pushpawant Palace in collaboration with the Tata Group. "This will be a game-changer for tourism and economic growth in the state,” he said.
Dr. Saha reiterated that the government's focus is on inclusive and apolitical development, with particular attention to sectors like health, infrastructure, and tourism.
The event was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya, Agartala Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar, Advocate General Shaktimoy Chakraborty, Deputy Mayor Monika Das Dutta, and other senior officials and dignitaries.
