Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel Inaugurates ₹249 Crore Development Works in Surat.
As part of the Urban Development Year 2025 celebrations, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated development works worth ₹249 crore by the Surat Municipal Corporation and Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA), and laid the foundation stone for projects worth ₹109.51 crore.
The event, held at the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University convention hall, also saw the Chief Minister laying foundation stones for additional projects worth ₹242 crore by the Urban Ring Development Corporation Ltd. (URDCL), while gifting development initiatives worth ₹600 crore to Surat residents.
Speaking on the occasion, Patel highlighted the rapid pace of development in Surat and Gujarat under the Prime Minister’s leadership, noting that the state has set national benchmarks in cleanliness. He emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness as a daily habit and underlined the need for tree plantation under the “Ek Ped Maa ke Naam” initiative and water conservation through optimal rainwater use.
Patel also touched upon key infrastructure projects, including the completion of Surat's Outer Ring Road, which aims to ease traffic congestion and improve citizen amenities. He stressed that development now focuses on the common citizen, pointing out that executing large-scale projects has become significantly easier compared to the past.
Highlighting Gujarat’s broader progress, he noted initiatives like the development of Asia’s largest green energy park at Khavda, the rise of Kutch as a top tourist destination, and the transformation of the state’s coastline into a gateway for prosperity.
Surat District In-Charge and Finance Minister mentioned that the state government has allocated ₹30,000 crore for urban development in 2025-26, with funding also earmarked for new municipal corporations.
Urbanization in Gujarat is accelerating, and Surat, strategically located between Bharuch and Umargam, has become a key hub for development and employment. Surat Municipal Corporation Commissioner Shalini Agrawal welcomed attendees and noted that the ₹600 crore development package would bolster infrastructure in new areas of the city.
Several projects were launched to digitalize public services, improve water management, enhance cleanliness and public health, and strengthen the city’s infrastructure network. Key initiatives include water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, drainage lines, health centres, fire stations, vending markets, and box culverts for rainwater drainage.
Under Phase-2 of the Outer Ring Road Project by URDCL, foundation stones were laid for the Sachin-Palsana to Sachin-Kadodara Junction Outer Ring Road project worth ₹184.20 crore and a flyover on Surat-Kadodara Road Outer Ring Road for ₹57.65 crore.
SUDA also initiated traffic management projects, including four-way junctions, asphalt roads, and road resurfacing under various Town Planning schemes.
Additionally, under the Chief Minister’s guidance, the Surat Municipal Corporation launched an online payment facility via a WhatsApp chatbot, allowing residents to access municipal services quickly, simply, and transparently, in line with the Digital India Mission.
