Gurgaon plans 4 construction waste centres.

Gurgaon, a city in a perpetual building boom, is planning to build four construction waste recycling plants soon, one each in the four blocks of the district.

'Keeping in mind the steps National Green Tribunal is taking to improve the quality of environment we are living in, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon met last Thursday and put building recycling plants on our agenda. The corporation is working on the feasibility plan,' Vimal Yadav, the city's mayor, said.

However, this is not the first time the corporation has decided to have such a recycling plant. In 2013, the civic body was to allot the tender to a company which was supposed to recycle the waste and share profits with the corporation. But it was concluded that the plan was not 'financially viable'.

According to the initial plan, five acres of land in Begumpur Khatola were to be leased for 20 years to the firm that bagged the tender. 'It was planned that MCG would then pay Rs. 360 per tonne to the agency for collecting construction waste that. The sum included transport cost too. The agency was told to share 10 per cent of its profits,' Yadav said.

According to the new plan, Gurgaon will be divided into four zones and all will have a separate recycling plant for construction and demolition waste.

'We will soon float tenders for this. In all probability, we will have separate agencies at these four locations. We will keep in mind how financially beneficial could each agency be,' Yadav told Newsline.
