India's first Bullet Train Project Enters Critical Execution Phase, Opens New Opportunities

India’s 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor is moving into a critical execution and systems phase, creating opportunities across civil construction, tunnelling, track, electrification, signalling, rolling stock, stations, depots, testing and commissioning.

The ₹1.08-lakh-crore project, being implemented by National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) with Japanese funding and technology cooperation, will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad through 12 stations. Around 90% of the alignment is elevated, while the Maharashtra section includes the technically challenging 21-km BKC-Shilphata tunnel.

The immediate focus is the Surat-Vapi section. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said construction is targeted for completion by December 2026, with the first India-made high-speed train expected to be placed on the corridor around April-May 2027 for extensive trials. Passenger operations on the first section are targeted around mid-2027.

The rolling-stock programme has also gathered momentum. BEML recently secured an order exceeding ₹5,400 crore from NHSRCL for the supply and maintenance of high-speed rolling stock and allied works. The indigenous B28 train is being developed for speeds of up to 280 kmph, while Japan’s next-generation E10 Shinkansen is expected to join the programme later.

Meanwhile, tunnelling in Maharashtra, track installation, overhead electrification and station finishing are advancing. The project is consequently shifting from predominantly heavy civil construction towards a wider opportunity pipeline encompassing railway systems, equipment, electrical works, train manufacturing, testing, operations and long-term maintenance.
