India's Longest Ropeway to Connect Dehradun and Mussoorie in Three Years

In a significant development, the cities of Dehradun and Mussoorie in India are set to be linked by what is poised to become India's longest ropeway, spanning a remarkable 5.5 kilometers. The project, known as the Dehradun Mussoorie Ropeway Project (DMRP), is currently in progress, with phase-I expected to be completed by September 2026.

The impressive 5.5-kilometer-long ropeway, which aims to connect the twin cities of Dehradun and Mussoorie, is being constructed by the Mussoorie Sky Car Company, led by a consortium headed by FIL Industries. This consortium also includes SRM Engineering LLP and boasts POMA SAS France as its technology partner. The ropeway, featuring 10-seater diamond cabins, is designed to have a capacity to transport 1,300 passengers per hour per direction.

The Rs. 300-crore mono-cable ropeway is anticipated to drastically reduce travel time in the hilly terrain, transforming a journey that currently takes 1.5 hours to a mere 15 minutes. It will serve as a convenient alternative to the 33-kilometer driving distance between Dehradun and Mussoorie, which can take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

Owais Altaf Syed, Group Director of FIL Industries, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We are very excited to launch this mega ropeway project in Uttarakhand, FIL Industries’ second ropeway project in India, after our Skyview by Empyrean project in Patnitop, Jammu. The Mussoorie-Dehradun sustainable ropeway project is being built with state-of-the-art technology. Once ready, it will not only provide a source of employment and generate revenue for the state but will also attract tourists from around the world, significantly contributing to the state's GDP."

The proposed ropeway will feature 10-seater cabins, operating throughout the year regardless of weather conditions. It is noteworthy for being the first ropeway in India designed to serve both tourism purposes and urban mobility between the two cities in Uttarakhand, according to the consortium's statement.
