Metro rail services in Indore are expected to begin operations by the end of January or February, as officials finalize the necessary documentation for approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) is in the final stages of submitting documents to the CMRS. Upon receiving approval, the metro rail can begin its commercial operations.
Initially, the metro rail will run along a high-priority 5.90 km corridor between Gandhi Nagar station and station number three of the Super Corridor. Trial runs on this route were conducted last September. However, initial passenger numbers may be low due to the scattered population along this corridor. MPMRCL officials are confident that ridership will increase as the metro rail network expands.
While stations are designed to accommodate six-coach trains, services will initially operate with three-coach trains. If passenger demand rises, additional coaches will be added. Each three-coach metro car can carry up to 300 passengers, including 50 seated ones.
The first phase of the metro rail project, which was launched in September 2019 with an investment of Rs 7,500.80 crore, includes a 31.5 km ring-shaped corridor in the city.
