JICA ’s plans for improving water system

Karachi: A water and sewerage expert from Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), Sadanobu Sawara on Tuesday said the agency is conducting a survey to design a master plan for improving water and sewerage system for Karachi. Speaking at Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), he said a Jica team has started collecting industrial data of water consumption and sewerage water discharge by different units.

Sawara said that after this exercise the Jica team would prepare a comprehensive report and submit the same to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB). The master plan would be ready by 2025, he informed the chamber. Replying to a question, Sadanobu Sawara said that former City Nazim Naimatullah Khan during his visit to Japan has requested the Japanese government for preparing a master plan. He said that the study would also cover the issue of sewage treatment and its use for industrial production.

Welcoming the guest, KCCI President Shamim Ahmed Shamsi said setting up of treatment plant in every industrial unit is almost impossible. Karachi has five industrial estates. All of them were established long ago and no industrial unit has space to establish treatment plants to meet WTO requirement. He said combined effluent treatment plant is the only solution to this problem.
