Kamarajar Port Bulk Terminal Projects Attract Interest from Five Firms.

Five companies, including global players, have expressed interest in developing bulk terminals at Kamarajar Port in North Chennai under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, aimed at enhancing the port’s dry bulk cargo handling capacity, sources said. The names of the companies, however, could not be ascertained.

The project will be implemented on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis. Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL) had recently invited global expressions of interest (EoI) from investors, developers and terminal operators for the proposed facilities.

The proposed development includes the construction of two mechanised bulk berths, each 425 metres long, designed to handle cape-size vessels with a deadweight tonnage of 1.5–1.8 lakh tonnes.

Once operational, the project is expected to significantly strengthen the port’s capacity for handling dry bulk cargo and improve efficiency in maritime logistics along the North Chennai coast.
