Karachi Port sets up gantry cranes to boost box handling

Karachi: A latest Gantry Crane with a maximum twin lift capacity of 45 tons arrived here at Karachi Port on Sunday. This is the seventh crane to be operated at KPT berth and is part of the equipment deployed for expansionary Phase-II of PICT.


This new generation crane is the latest container-handling crane not only in the country but also in the South Asian Region with an outreach of 54 meters and the capability of lifting two containers at a time.


It is manufactured by Zhen Hua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC), a Global Market Leader in crane manufacturing, at a cost of dollar six million.


The crane would double the efficiency of containerised cargo handling at Karachi Port as it is capable of lifting 100 empty containers in an hour.


Two Rubber Tyre Gantry Cranes are also shortly arriving at Karachi Port.


The eighth Gantry Crane, having the same capacity as the one arrived, would join the existing seven Gantry Cranes in August this year. --
