Kerala to allocate land to set up oil storage facility in Vizhinjam.

Kerala government will set apart 100 acres of land for establishing storage facilities as part of the Vizhinjam seaport and international container transhipment terminal project.

The land will spread out between Vizhinjam and adjoining town of Balaramapuram, according to Ports Minister K Babu.

The project will be jointly taken up by Bharat Petroleum, Indian Oil Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum.

The decision was taken at a meeting of government officials and representatives of the oil companies chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

The oil majors will form a consortium for the purpose, which will be given right-of-way for laying pipelines along the 15-km railway line.

Land has already been earmarked inside the proposed port area for establishing the bunkering facility.

The project will help to help take away hazardous consignments from the heavily congested road network in the state and thus reduce traffic on the national highway.
