Kolkata Port and JSW Infrastructure Ink Concession Agreement for Berth Upgrade.

The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMPK) in Kolkata officially signed a 30-year concession agreement with JSW Infrastructure recently to modernize and mechanize two crucial berths at the Netaji Subhas Dock. The project, valued at approximately ₹740 crore, is a significant step toward upgrading the port's infrastructure and boosting its capacity.

The agreement focuses on the reconstruction of Berth 8 and the mechanization of both Berths 7 and 8. The plan includes installing state-of-the-art rail-mounted quay cranes (RMQC) to speed up container cargo handling. The project also encompasses a 25-acre backup area to support operations.

Once completed, the modernized terminal will have a capacity of 5 lakh TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). According to a statement from SMPK, this initiative aligns with the government's vision of creating modern, world-class ports.

SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman emphasized that the project underscores the port authority's commitment to enhancing trade facilitation and strengthening port infrastructure.
