Konkan Railway Introduces Car Ferry for Maharashtra-Goa Route.
Indian Railways' Konkan Railway has introduced a new car ferry service for private vehicle owners, connecting Kolad in Maharashtra with Verna in Goa. This innovative service is set to drastically cut travel time, reducing the journey to approximately 12 hours. The inaugural trip is scheduled for August 23.
The new "car train" will operate with departures from Kolad at 5:00 PM, arriving in Verna at 5:00 AM the following day. Customers transporting their vehicles are required to report three hours prior to departure. A key feature of the service allows passengers to load their cars onto the train and travel alongside their vehicles, offering a convenient way to commute between the two states.
Konkan Railway has developed a specialized rake capable of accommodating 40 cars per trip, with two vehicles loaded onto each of the 20 wagons. The freight charge for this service is ₹7,875 per car (inclusive of GST). To book, an initial registration fee of ₹4,000 is required at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due on the day of the journey.
