KPT’s berth reconstruction to be completed by 2010

Karachi: The Secretary Ports and Shipping, Saleem Khan visited Karachi Port to review the progress made by the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) on reconstruction of berths, says a press release. During the presentation session, the secretary was briefed that a Korean company Ssang Yong was assigned the reconstruction work of berths at East Wharf.

He was informed that the detailed designing of berths 10-14 had cost Rs 70 million and their reconstruction would cost Rs 5.5 billion, it said. Two of the under reconstruction berths would be ready by next June while the remaining three would be made operational by March 2010. He was further informed that after reconstruction, the berths would have 16 meters depth, which would enable the port to handle large vessels.
