Land Hurdle Delays Mega Projects of MCL.

Several mega development projects of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. (MCL) in Hemgir block of Sundargarh district have either failed to take off or stuck midway for different reasons with protest by land oustees being a major bottleneck.

According to sources, the Basundhara-Garjanbahal (B-G) area of MCL, estimated to have Asia's largest coal deposit, has planned to reach 100 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) production capacity. The expansion would be carried out in two phases.

While 72 MTPA would be reached in the first phase with expansion of Kulda and Basundhara open cast mines and new mines at Garjanbahal and Siarmal, the rest 22 MTPA would be achieved in the second phase. For the second phase, a separate corporate entity, independent of MCL, would come up in the district as subsidiary of Coal India Ltd. (CIL).
