"L&T wins a major mandate for bridge construction in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas, worth an estimated ₹1,000–2,500 crore."
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) recently said its Transportation Infrastructure business has won a “significant” order for the construction of an arterial cable-stayed bridge over the Muri Ganga River in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal.
L&T categorises “significant” orders as those valued between ₹1,000 crore and ₹2,500 crore.
The project involves building a 3.2 km, 2+2 lane extradosed cable-stayed bridge with a maximum span of 177 metres. Approach roads of 0.9 km on the Kakdwip side and 0.65 km on the Sagar Island side are also part of the scope. The bridge will feature advanced traffic management systems, a bridge health monitoring system, architectural lighting, hybrid street lighting, and essential road furniture.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to provide direct, all-weather connectivity to Sagar Island, which currently relies on ferry services that are often disrupted during bad weather. The project is anticipated to benefit more than two lakh residents by improving mobility, access to healthcare, and economic opportunities.
L&T noted that the new link will also enhance connectivity for pilgrims attending the annual Ganga Sagar Mela, India’s second-largest religious gathering after the Kumbh Mela, by offering safer and more reliable access.
