Mahi–Jawai Dam Link Project, Worth ₹7,000 Crore, Moves Forward After CM-Level Talks.

A long-awaited project to link the Mahi and Jawai dams, aimed at solving the severe drinking water crisis in four districts of western Rajasthan, is gaining momentum. A key meeting was held on Wednesday between Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Animal Husbandry Minister Joraram Kumawat to advance the ₹7,000 crore initiative.

The project is designed to utilize surplus monsoon water from the Mahi and Som rivers and channel it to the Jawai Dam, a vital lifeline for the region. Along the way, it will also replenish other crucial reservoirs, including the Jaisamand Dam.

Minister Kumawat confirmed that the project follows a budget announcement made by Chief Minister Sharma during the 2024–25 state budget session. The Chief Minister had proposed a large-scale water management initiative to harness excess monsoon water and address the long-standing water shortages in districts like Pali, Jalore, Sirohi, and Barmer.

A budget of ₹15.60 crore has been approved to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR), which will outline the blueprint for the massive undertaking. The Water Resources Department in Jaipur has issued administrative and technical sanctions and has entrusted WAPCOS (Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited) with the task of preparing the DPR.

WAPCOS has already submitted its initial inspection report, which has been approved by the Udaipur Water Resources Division. This approval marks a significant step toward the project's execution and brings the promise of a more reliable water supply closer to reality for millions of residents in the affected districts.
