Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has ramped up its automotive design capabilities with the expansion of its design studio in Mumbai, aiming to accelerate the launch of new models across its passenger and commercial vehicle segments, including electric vehicles.
Unveiled on April 7, the upgraded facility has doubled its headcount to 100 and features advanced technologies, including a new milling machine that converts digital sketches into physical clay models. The studio also houses an in-house paint shop, enhancing its end-to-end design capabilities.
The move is part of M&M’s strategy to strengthen its SUV lineup and shorten the time from concept design to commercial launch. The company also operates a UK-based design centre focused primarily on electric vehicle development.
“Technically, products across companies are becoming similar—it’s the same motor, same engine, same batteries. What sets them apart is design and user experience,” said Ajay Saran Sharma, Senior Vice President & Head of Mahindra India Design Studio. He added that the company is also exploring the use of artificial intelligence to speed up design processes and improve execution.
Pratap Bose, Chief Design and Creative Officer at M&M, noted, “The new studio will attract the best design talent from India and become a leading automotive design centre. Its influence on our products will be seen for many years to come.”
