MCD to Set Up 125-Tonne-Per-Day Biogas Plant in North Delhi.
A 125-tonne-per-day (TPD) compressed biogas plant is set to come up between the Bhalaswa and Jharoda dairy clusters in north Delhi to manage cattle waste and prevent it from polluting the Yamuna, officials said.
The proposal for land acquisition has been submitted, and discussions between the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are at an advanced stage. An official said a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between the two agencies, following which MCD will take possession of the land and begin construction of the facility.
The project is planned on an 8.4-acre site located between the two dairy clusters, with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) having submitted the project plan to MCD.
The facility will have separate processing capacity of 75 TPD each for the Bhalaswa and Jharoda dairies, officials said. The plant is expected to process cattle waste generated by thousands of animals in the surrounding areas and convert it into clean cooking fuel.
Officials noted that dairy waste, along with solid waste dumping and small-scale industries, contributes to around 20% of pollution in the Yamuna within Delhi, while the remaining pollution load comes primarily from domestic sewage.
The proposed facility is part of efforts to improve waste management and reduce untreated organic waste entering water bodies. In September 2025, MCD commissioned its first large biogas plant at Nangli Dairy in southwest Delhi, with a processing capacity of 200 TPD.
Officials said converting cattle waste into compressed biogas would help address waste disposal challenges while creating a sustainable source of renewable energy.
